Location, Climate and Topography
- Location: The vineyard is located in the Rattlesnake Hills region of the Yakima Valley. We are located just 1 mile directly west of the famed Sheridan Vineyards at very nearly the same elevation.
- Elevation: 1060 feet; the vineyard slope ranges from 2% to 7%. This slope results in a consistent gentle breeze that warms the vineyard in winter and circulates and cools the air in summer.
- Temperature: Our temperature monitoring took place over three years, pinpointing three crucial zones of the vineyard. In winter, our temperatures are consistently 5 degrees warmer than the main reporting stations in the upper Yakima Valley. During the major winter freezes of 2003, our low temperatures were still well above the 50% kill level marker, while many other vineyards in the area experienced significant plant damage. Another singular feature is the consistency of the growing degree data at several topographically distinct areas of the vineyard. Data from the three monitored locations in the vineyard shows that the annual average is in excess of 3100 growing degree days with a range of 150-200 frost free days.
- Precipitation: 6-9 inches annually; mostly off growing season. Most precipitation in the growing season comes in the form of infrequent thunderstorms.
- Soils: Two predominant types – Burke silt loam and the Scoon series. Burke silt loam is moderately deep, well-drained soil formed on loess over a lime and silica duripan. The Scoon series is a shallow, well-drained soil on uplands, formed on loess over a lime and silica duripan.
- Soil depth: 6 to 15 inches over hardpan and duripan.
